Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry

Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry

It’s great news that the incidents of tooth decay have significantly diminished over the years due to the use of fluorides and an increase in patient awareness. However, teeth are still susceptible to decay, infection, and breakage and sometimes need to be restored back to health. Through improved techniques and modern technology, we are now able to offer more options for restoring a tooth back to its normal shape, appearance and function. We offer composite fillings, veneers, crowns, bridges and implant crowns. Should your teeth ever require a restorative treatment, you can rest assured that we will always discuss the available options and recommend the most comfortable and least invasive treatment. Providing you with excellent care is our No. 1 priority when creating your beautiful smile.

Early Periodontal Disease Treatments

Early Periodontal Disease Treatments

cosmetic-dentistry Periodontal disease is a common disease affecting 75 percent of all Americans. It affects the gums and supporting bone around the teeth. Left untreated, it results in eventual tooth loss. Because early gum disease is painless, patients are often unaware that there is a problem. For this reason, regular dental visits are essential for the early diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.

Invisalign®

Invisalign®

invisalign-charlotte-ncInvisalign is the invisible way to straighten teeth without braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth, without metal or wires. Invisalign uses 3-D computer imaging technology to depict the complete treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position. Each “aligner” moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. Invisalign allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan before you start—so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

Intra Oral Camera

Intra Oral Camera

This is a tiny camera with a fiber optic light source small enough to be placed within the mouth. This camera allows images of your teeth to be displayed on a computer monitor. Some of the conditions we can see with an intra oral camera that are difficult to see with the naked eye include various types of oral lesions, broken fillings, cracked teeth and cavities in areas that are difficult to see and reach. Our patients can better understand the diagnosis and proposed treatment when they can see it themselves.intra-oral-camera

Digital Radiographs

Digital Radiographs

dental-radiograph(X-rays) allow us to take films with up to 95 percent less radiation than conventional X-rays. Sensors, instead of film, are placed in the patient’s mouth and after exposure, the image appears on a computer screen in just seconds. Instead of holding up small films that are hard to see, Dr. Rogers or Dr. Gustafson can look at the images on a computer screen together with the patient. The image can be enlarged for easy viewing if needed. This technology is not only safer to our patients but also allows them to understand the diagnosis.

Extractions

Extractions

Sometimes teeth need to be removed due to decay, infection, or orthodontic reasons. We offer local anesthesia, with the option of oral sedation or nitrous oxide sedation to make this a comfortable and painless procedure.

Root Canals

Root Canals

A root canal is sometimes needed when a cavity has become deep enough to infect the nerve of the tooth. It is not a painful procedure, as many patients often think! Local anesthesia, and different types of conscious sedation are available to make a patient more comfortable.

Wisdom Teeth Consultations

Wisdom Teeth Consultations

Wisdom teeth or third molars are often hard to clean and can become impacted in the jaw causing pain and infection. Our doctors are trained to evaluate wisdom teeth, and recommend their extraction (if needed). Some wisdom teeth can be extracted in our office, and others necessitate a referral to a local oral surgeon.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening

A part of every routine dental exam, our doctors check all areas of the mouth and throat for oral cancer, as well as screening for cancer risk factors.

Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when your muscles relax during sleep, allowing the soft tissue to collapse and block the airway. As a result, sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing up to hundreds of times a night for anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute. Snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, memory problems, irritability, fatigue and insomnia are all signs that you could be losing shut-eye to sleep apnea. If left untreated, sleep apnea can be a potentially life threatening condition. It can increase the risk for other serious health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression and impotence. The traditionally prescribed treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Although CPAP is effective, up to half of patients don’t adhere to the treatment. Dentists can provide an alternate sleep solution with oral appliance therapy. A dental oral appliance looks like a sports mouth guard and is worn only during sleep. It supports the jaw in a forward position to help maintain an open upper airway, preventing sleep apnea and snoring. Once you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea by a sleep physician, our office can make a custom-fitted oral appliance using impressions and models of your teeth. Oral appliance therapy is covered by many medical insurance plans. Patients like it because it’s comfortable, easy to wear, quiet, portable, convenient for travel and easy to clean. If you have concerns about snoring and sleep apnea, please let our office know – the treatment of snoring or sleep apnea can make a big difference in a person’s quality of life!
